Op onze website kunt u archieven doorzoeken met behulp van inventarissen (beschrijvingen van archieven, ook wel toegang genoemd). Deze inventarissen zijn vaak net zo oud als de archieven zelf. De mogelijkheid bestaat dat u woorden tegenkomt die vroeger gewoon waren, maar nu als kwetsend, racistisch of discriminerend ervaren worden.
Het Nationaal Archief onderzoekt momenteel de mogelijkheden om dit taalgebruik in inventarissen aan te passen, te verklaren of te voorzien van hedendaagse alternatieven.
